Does it work with Spotify Free?

Yes. Because the visualizer reacts to your system's sound rather than to Spotify itself, it doesn't matter whether you're on Spotify Free or Premium - ads and all, everything that plays gets visualized.

Can I show the visualizer while Spotify runs in the background?

Yes. Keep Spotify playing in the background and put ProVisHD fullscreen (F11), or keep the visualizer always on top in a corner of your screen while you work.

The built-in record mode saves the visualizer plus the playing audio as an MP4 for your own use. If you plan to publish a video, make sure you have the rights to the music in it - most streamed tracks are copyrighted.
